The COUNTIF formula

With this handy formula we can count occurances very quickly. This is one of the basic formulas we will use day by day.

It can count occurrences in large data sets for a certain criteria.

Have you ever had to tally up sales data, or occurrence of names?
When your boss hands you this kind of stuff:

We can do this easily with the COUNTIF formula!

THE COUNTIF Formula
The formula itself is not too difficult.

The first part of the formula wants you to input (drag) a range where we going to look for stuff to count.
=COUNTIF(range,criteria)
Then the second part of the formula asks for the criteria (what to count)
=COUNTIF(range,criteria)

Note, that we locked the formula in the example. This means that we can add or remove columns, this will not affect our formula.
